end of term

Hi Prof. & class, I am so excited because the pressure is finally off of me. I got my grade and it is 98.58%. I couldn't believe that I got the whole 250 points on my project. I would like to thank my teacher for being so kind and understanding, for taking the time to explain the questions that were bought up in seminars and on the discussion board. I thank the class for being so supportive and for all the feedback that I received from each and every one of you. This class has taught me a lot and it will help me in future classes. Hey, look at me, I even learned how to blog eventhough I didn't think that I would ever be interested in blogging, but I like it. I wish and hope that all of you have done as well as I have. I look forward to keeping in touch with you all.

End of term

This is another term that is closing for me. I was kind of relucant to to going back to school after so many years had passedme by, but I am glad that I did especially since my son and daughter were behind me 100% and I also have a sister who is like a mother to me who gives me her full support and a uncle who is now deceased whom treated me like a daughter and supported me by buying me a new computer so I could attend classes. I have to thank my family for supporting me and to say I love my uncle although he is not on earth but he is with me through his spirit and God. Even though I lost a lot, I have gained more than I lost. I have enjoyed all of you and especially our Prof. I wish you all the best in the future. I feel like is the beginning and not the end. Good Luck!!!

being forgettful

Hello everyone, so sorry that I forgot to post my blogspot in the unit 8 session. I have had a lot on my plate lately and have been forgetting stuff. I did go back and posted my address. I hope that I don't forget anything else before this term is over. Seeing a big fat 0 freaked me out. I hate 0's. Anyway I am having to deal with my husband and his sickness and it is becoming nerve wrecking. With prayer things will get better.

forgettful

Hi everyone,
lately I have been being very forgettful. I have attended two seminars in a row late. I have had so much on my plate that it is getting the best of me. I really hate to miss a seminar because they seem to help me a lot and I depend on them to get me through the class. I don't know what my next move is going to be if my memory don't get back on track. Trying to take care of my husband is really getting next to me. I have to keep up with all of his appointments and medications which are constantly changing and not to mention my own medication and appointments. I write stuff down and than forget where I put the notes at. All I can do now is PRAY that things will get better.

Saturday, October 16, 2010

Hello Prof and gang, we have finally made it to unit 8 and we have all done very well. I have enjoyed all the feed back and comments from both , my Prof and my fellow classmates. Your comments have helped me to get through this term. I don't think that I could have made it this far without all of you. After this class is over, I am going to continue to blog now that I understand it . Maybe I will be reading some of your posts in months to come. Good luck to all.

Unit 6
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Deljay Fields
Sept. 30, 2010

Kaplan University
CM299
Professor G. Williams

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a disease that has been on the rise, which most young women have very little knowledge about. GDM is treatable but there is no cure for it and once you develop this condition, you have it for life. Your doctor will tell you that it can be controlled, but there is no cure for it. However exercise, eating the right foods and keeping your weight under control can help to keep blood sugar levels within a normal range. GDM usually develops in women during pregnancy. Many years ago women did not know what this disease was or what affects it could have on the body. Women seem to think that when their body go through changes during pregnancy that it is normal even when they sometimes gain too much weight. This could be harmful to the mother and their unborn child. After giving birth, the mother blood sugar usually returns to normal, but some women who have been diagnosed with GDM will develop diabetes later in life (Milchovich and Dunn-Long, 1999).  Let’s explore the causes of GDM, who is at risk of getting this condition, and what treatment can be done to help to protect ourselves and our unborn child.
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus usually occurs because hormones produces by the placenta block the action of insulin in the body, causing insulin resistance. Increased body weight only complicates the problem. The body needs more insulin but at the same time she is also insulin resistance (Thomas, 1999).
Women who are at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus or type 2 diabetes are overweight, may have a family member with diabetes, over 30 years of age, have high blood pressure and are Hispanic, African, Native, or Asian American (Milchovich and Dunn-Long, 1999). These are a few of risk factors for diabetes. If the parent has diabetes then there is a chance of the child having this condition because it is heredity. However this does not mean that you will have it because sometimes it can skip a generation. However, people whose mother had diabetes were twice as likely to get the disease as those who father had diabetes (Risk Factors for Diabetes, 2007). Have you notice that when you go to the doctor that one of the main questions that they ask is the history of your family. They need to know this information because it helps the doctor to diagnose your condition much better. This is why you need to know as much information on your family medical background as possible.  Family history plays a very important role in women’s with diabetes (Risk Factors for Diabetes). Before being diagnosed for GDM you will have to a blood sugar test done which is ordered by the doctor. Blood sugar tests are usually done why getting your routine checkup and if the blood sugar is higher than 140 milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood plasma then you are referred to a laboratory for an oral glucose tolerance test (Schlosberg, 2010).
Exercise is very important in our daily lives. A regular exercise program combined with a healthy diet could mean that you can control the use of insulin or oral agents or that you can get by with less medication (American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes, 1999-2002). Including exercise in a daily routine can be very important to each individual. It can improve both physical and mental outlook also you can lose weight, body fat and increase muscle tone and strength (American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes, 1999-2002). You don’t have to do this all at once, start off slow and gradually add a few more laps around the block or a few more exercises to your routine. The more you exercise, the more your body will get used to it and pretty soon you will not be able to start the morning until you have done your exercises. Remember to always consult with your physician before starting any type of exercises.
During pregnancy your doctor may recommend that you follow a meal plan. A well balance and healthy meal is one way to help keep to your blood sugar under control. Instill of eating three large meals, it will be better to eat several meals with smaller portions. Eat the right amounts of food at the right time and don’t skip meals. Keep your carbohydrate foods constant from meal to meal (Milchovich and Dunn-Long, 1999). When eating away from home it is still good to follow a healthy food guide by making good nutritional choices. There is an old saying that my mother used to say which states that you are what you eat.
Most women who are pregnant usually are diagnosed with GDM and they don’t realize the risks of having this disease. Once diagnosed, it is like a learning process for finding out certain information to help understand. There are very few symptoms that will send a signal to the brain because GDM is hard to detect. After giving birth, sometimes your blood sugar goes back to being normal, but on the other hand you may become a diabetic later on in life. You will need to make healthy food choices, plan an exercise program, and take medications as prescribed by your doctor. Food, medicine and exercise can be considered as a tool that is used to balance your blood sugar (Milchovich and Dunn-Long, 1999).

walking

Boy, am I excited. I went to the foot specialist and was finally told that I could try walking. It has been about 12 years since I was diagnosed with charcoat foot, have had several surgries over the course of 12 years. Now I am able to walk and loving it. I can only walk around the block because he wants me to take it slow and gradually walk farther. I have to thank god for taking care of me all this time and saving my foot. I thank my doctor for having the knowledge and the power from god to do what had to be done. I think that I am truely BLESSED. I picked the title Happyfeet because dancing was my joy. Going through my trials and tribulations has shown me that god has the power to give and take when you put osther things before him. Lesson well learned.

Having Knowledge

I am trying to start writing my paper but it is hard to get started. I picked a topic that I don't really know much about but it happen to me during my pregnancy with  my son and now I am a diabetic and also my son is a diabetic. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that happens to some women when they are pregnant usually in the 3rd trimester. I wonder if it could have been prevented if I had known about this disease and had come type of knowledge of GDM. I didn't know until I had gone in for my 6 weeks checkup.

early in the morning

Good Morning everyone, it is 5:20 A.M. and I am sitting here trying to gather my thoughts. This is the best time for me to do my thinking and gather my thoughts. This is my third term and I am in my fourth week of this term. The time really does fly and I am enjoying every bit of it. I am getting good grades in both classes so far and learning more and more about the computer and the different technology. I never thought that I would be blogging and it is so exciting to know that I can do this. I am getting to know my fellow classmates and professor. It is such a joy to meet all of you.

what will I do if someone used my work and not give me credit

Hello, I realized that when kusing someone else's work that you are to give credit to that work so that it doden't look as though you are claiming the credit of that particular work. If someone were to steal my work, I would be very upset and it does happen in my own home with my husband and son. I can suggest something and ten minutes later one of them can suggest the same idea and all of a sudden it is the perfect thing to do. In the case of writting a paper, I would report it, or confront the person in hope of them giving me the credit that is due to me.

Monday, September 13, 2010

Hi everyone, it is 5 A.M. this morning and I am on the computer most of the time in the early A.M. I love being online because it gives me the change to attend class when it is more convient for me. It was hard at first because of my lack of understanding all this new technology, but the more I use it, the more I tend to like it. I have made it to my third term in my first year at Kaplan and enjoying meeting people from all over the world.
Hi everyone, just want to let you know that I am still trying to get used to this blogging. I am reading your posts and will try to respond to them. Blogging is not something that I am overwelmed about but I guess I will get used to it in time, hopefully before this term is over.

Technology on the blink

I am just sitting here thinking about yesterday (9-3-10). There was a lot of confusion going on concerning the social security checks in Shelby and Duncan Mississippi. The state treasury called the post master and had them to put a hold on passing out the state checks because the amounts on the checks were more than what they should have been. Just another mistake made by computers and the person controlling the input.
